**Foreign Language Assistance Program grant at risk of being eliminated**

Press release from Representative John Boehner (R-OH), Chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, regarding legislation he introduced last week.  HR-4018, the Setting Priorities in Spending Act, would provide "relief" for the victims of Hurricane Katrina by eliminating fourteen education programs of "questionable value".  Two of the programs, Foreign Language Assistance Program  and Star Schools, are of considerable importance and unquestionable value to foreign languages and international studies.

The President and the House Leadership have already attempted to eliminate these valuable education programs by requesting zero funding.  HR 4018 would go further to actually eliminate the programs' existence not just their funding.

Please write, e-mail or call your Representative to express our strong opposition to HR 4018 and its elimination of important education programs. These programs exist because they have not been supported elsewhere and they do have a proven and successful track record.

This is an important opportunity for us to make ourselves heard.  Please take a few minutes to exercise your civic duty to communicate with your Member of Congress.

The press release may also be accessed at http://johnboehner.house.gov/news.asp?FormMode=Detail&ID=1030  .
