*Conference registration includes access to FLANC webinars to be presented Monday (10/21), Tuesday (10/22) and Wednesday (10/23) from 8:00 – 10:00 PM. A link will be sent to you directly inviting you to sign up for the webinars you wish to attend.

Conference registration fees do not include optional workshops scheduled on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon after the regular conference sessions on each day. Workshop registration fees are $30 per workshop selected.

Classroom Read Aloud and Connection Anchor Charts

DLI teachers will have the opportunity to learn ways to build strong vocabulary through the use of classroom read aloud and connection anchor charts.  Teachers will gain an understanding of how to connect vocabulary across two languages and engage students at the same time.  Participants will have the opportunity to view model read aloud lessons taught in a DLI classroom and view classroom connection charts being used with students.

From Authentic Resources to Authentic Assessments

Authentic resources connect learners to both the language and the cultures under study and offer a window into the everyday lives of people who speak the target language. Such resources engage learners in authentic interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational tasks that provide formative or summative feedback on student performance. This workshop examines different kinds of authentic resources available along with a variety of task-types which lend themselves to authentic assessment tasks.

Straight From the Heart: Adapting Compelling Short Film to Touch Students' Souls & Build Proficiency

Our emotions and the stories we tell are strongly linked to learning, memory, and especially attention. Using short films as our guide, we will look at how we can leverage high interest, reaction-provoking media to engage students in language learning. Participants will leave with examples of proficiency-building activities that they can use in their classrooms immediately as well as skills to adapt the activities for other stories. This session is BYOT--bring your own tissues!

"Cooperative Learning Strategies for Real Classroom Leaders"

Teachers will develop key strategies for developing effective cooperative learning teams, transforming their classroom from grouping to teaming. Students will show responsibility, appreciate diversity, respect other's ideas, opinions, and attitudes, be proactive, increase their self-esteem, have increase motivation, have a positive attitude towards language learning, seek help and offer help, as well as improve all modes of communications. Putting the Pieces Together with The National Geographic Geo-Inquiry Process

Explore how you and your students can use the National Geographic’s Geo-Inquiry Process to become advocates for change in your community and beyond.  Through this integrated project based, critical thinking skills in action process students gain a better understanding of our planet and empowers them to generate solutions to real world challenges.  This includes asking questions, collecting and visualizing data, and creating compelling stories that inspire others to act for the common good.

Interculturality and the arts

Teachers often use various works of art to expose students to authentic images from the target culture .Discover how to effectively integrate visual and performing arts in your curriculum.  Both the visual and performing arts have been shown to increase student engagement and enhance learning outcomes.  Experience examples of arts integration and arts infusion to help develop engaging lessons that will promote interculturality and global awareness.

Dual Language Swap Session

Charlotte Hancock, University of North Carolina at Charlotte and FLANC DL/I Representative

This session will give ideas of different activities that educators can implement in a Dual Language Classroom. Participants will also be asked to share ideas of what they are currently doing in the classroom, whether that be in the Dual Language or World Language classroom that would be beneficial to language educators. Much time will be dedicated to discussion revolving around current practices and ways to support one another in the field. Let your voices be heard! Time will be dedicated to Dual Language burning questions. What current situations are being faced by Dual Language educators in the field and in what ways can FLANC, networking groups, and research best support in moving the field forward?
